Alzheimer's InformationAlzheimer's disease in the recent past has received unprecedented public attention as a result of high profile individuals suffering from disease (for example, Ronald Reagan and Iris Murdoch), but also as a result of media attention stemming from the National Institute of Clinical Excellence's draft guidance suggesting that the anti-Alzheimer drugs should not be available on the National Health Service. With this seepage of information into the public domain, everybody has become more aware of memory problem, their effects on individuals and carers, and their implications in terms of diagnosis, both for themselves and for their relatives. Because the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease are primarily emotional and behavioural rather than physical, they can be surrounded by an air of mysticism coupled with the fact that probably one of our mot basic fears is loss of function and loss of independence, leading to incoherence. It seemed timely to have a publication dealing specifically with dementia and one of its most common causes, Alzheimer's disease, in particular. Hopefully the information provided here will be of use to people suffering from memory problems, people already diagnosed as having dementia, their families, relatives and carers.
