Are People With Alzheimer's Disease Living Longer? There is some evidence to suggest that the survival time of people with Alzheimer's disease is greater than it was a few years ago. However, it is quite complicated to interpret the evidence for a number of reasons. There are differences in the way that dementia is diagnosed these days compared to a number of years ago and so it may be that groups of patients are not comparable. The diagnosis of dementia tends to be a bit of a moveable feast with some people being diagnosed relatively early in their illness and some people diagnosed relatively late. Thus, any estimate of survival from time of diagnosis will depend on how long a person has been ill before that diagnosis is made. Sometimes it can be quite difficult to accurately date when the first symptoms began that were attributable to the dementia. Even taking these things into consideration, there is some evidence that patients with dementia are living longer than they did a number of years ago. This is due to improved general medical care and there is also a suggestion that people taking anti-dementia drugs may live longer, possibly as a result of slowing the deterioration of the disease and perhaps by keeping people out of residential and nursing homes.
