Alzheimer's disease is progressive disorder of brain. So more care should be taken for Alzheimer's. It is better to consult doctor to know about the better care home for your loved ones. There are Alzheimer's organizations, which also help in knowing about these nursing homes, which are especially made for Alzheimer's only. Depending upon on the mental condition of Alzheimer's we can choose nursing home for our loved ones. There are two types of care homes for Alzheimer's. They are long-term care and nursing home care.

Long-term care

Long-term care means 24 hours care for your loved ones. This type of care is taken if the condition of your loved ones is very serious and they will in observation for every moment. It is a high level care for Alzheimer's to ensure safety. So we should have our own funds if we choose long-term care for our loved ones.

What Types of Care Do Nursing Homes Provide?

There are nursing homes, which are especially made for people who are affected by Alzheimer's disease. In these nursing homes specially trained doctors and nurses will be available to take care of our loved ones.

There are two types of care provided by nursing homes:

  • Basic care. This provides services that will help to maintain a person's ability to carry out necessary daily functions, like personal care and getting around. They will also ensure that the person is supervised and safe.
  • Skilled care. This is care that requires the services of a registered nurse for treatments and procedures on a regular basis. Skilled care also includes services provided by specially trained professionals, such as physical, occupational, and respiratory therapists.

What Services Do Nursing Homes Offer?

The services nursing homes offer vary from facility to facility. Services often include:

  • Room and board.
  • Monitoring of medication.
  • Personal care like dressing, bathing and toileting assistance.
  • 24-hour emergency care.
  • Social and recreational activities.

Tips & Warnings

  • Talk to your senior family member's physician or social worker for referrals when choosing a skilled nursing facility.
  • Medicare may pay 100 percent of the first 20 days a person stays in a nursing home and then a portion of the next 80 days. After that the person must pay out of pocket for skilled nursing attention.
